Signs Your AC Needs Replacement
The clearest signs are age past twelve to fifteen years, repairs that keep coming, rising summer bills with worse comfort, a compressor or coil failure, and an R-22 system that needs refrigerant work. One sign alone may just mean a repair; three or more together usually mean it is time to plan a replacement before the system chooses the day for you.

The signs, in the order we weigh them
Start with the expensive failures: a dead compressor or a leaking coil on an older system is rarely worth repairing. Next, frequency: the second breakdown in a season is a pattern, not bad luck. Then the bill: if your summer electric use climbs every year while the house feels worse, the equipment is losing efficiency in a way tune-ups cannot reverse.
Add comfort signs: rooms that never reach the set temperature on hot afternoons, humidity the system used to control and no longer does, and noise that has grown year by year. Each has possible repair causes, which is why a diagnosis comes before any replacement talk.

Planning beats emergency replacement
A planned AC replacement lets you compare efficiency levels, get the load calculation done properly and schedule the work in mild weather. The same job bought during a July breakdown is rushed by definition. If your system shows several signs, get the assessment in spring, even if you decide to run the old unit one more summer.

What an assessment should include
Load calculation, duct inspection, an honest remaining-life opinion, and written options at more than one efficiency level. Our AC installation page shows how we handle the installation itself when you decide to go ahead.
